From Novice to Maker: My iKier Laser Cutting & Engraving Journey
It all started two years ago with a box. Inside was my new iKier K1 Pro 24W laser engraver, and to be honest, I had no idea where to begin. The possibilities seemed endless, but also overwhelming. I started simple, by downloading drawings for a marble run. The joy of building it was incredible, and more importantly, I began a fast-paced education in the critical relationship between laser power, speed, and material settings. Learning to manipulate these parameters to get the results I needed was a game-changer.
A world of creativity opened up. I hadn't felt this sense of magical possibility since my first 3D printer ten years prior. My new mission was clear: to create things that were uniquely mine.
Bringing Imagination to Life: My iKier Project Portfolio
The real magic happened when I started applying my skills to personal projects. Here are a few that showcase the versatility of a diode laser:
1. The Enchanted LED Mirrors
Leveraging my growing experience with different surfaces, I experimented with engraving glass. I perfected a technique for creating delicate engravings on the back of mirrors. This led to the creation of "magic LED mirrors" for my son and daughter. The true enchantment comes when they automatically light up as you walk by, bringing a spark of wonder to their rooms.
Magic Mirror with Diode Laser and Lightburn
Here I show you how I designed a beautiful battery-operated LED Zelda mirror using Lightburn. The complete building instructions are in this video. I hope you enjoy the video.
2. A Custom Equestrian Headphone Stand
When my daughter requested a headphone stand, I saw another opportunity. We 3D printed the head of her favorite horse, and while the print was perfect, my painting skills were… well, let's say they resembled kindergarten art. Undeterred, I tried an airbrush. In minutes, the model was transformed with stunning, blended colors. To display it, I used my iKier K1 Pro Max 48W with its large work area to engrave a beautiful wooden wall plate—a perfect example of how 3D printing and laser cutting can work in harmony.
Horse Head in 3D
Since my sweet daughter loves horses and needed a place for her Bluetooth headphones, I got an STL of a horse head and printed it with my Ender 3 V3 Plus. The layer height is 0.2mm, the infill is 10%, and the Creality Hyper PLA was printed at 220°C with a maximum speed of 300mm/s.
3. The Glowing Retro DJ Console
As a former DJ, I wanted a piece of decor for my studio wall. I dreamed of a lit-up, decorative DJ console. I knew a diode laser couldn't cut clear acrylic, but I was curious about black acrylic glass. After some testing, I dialed in the perfect settings for both cutting and engraving. Designing the console in Lightburn software, I used a large sheet that fit the K1's generous 750mm x 410mm bed. I added LEDs and programmed an Arduino to run two OLED displays and a rotating track light effect, bringing my very own, fully custom DJ console to life.
Acrylic Glass Deco DJ Console
I show you here how I engrave and cut acrylic glass with a diode laser. From that, I built an LED decor DJ console. The whole thing includes 3D printing, epoxy resin, and Arduino. You will soon be able to read more details on my site. I hope you like this little workshop story.
4. The Star Wars Mythosaur Skull with a Heartbeat
Inspired by a Star Wars marathon with my son, I created a Mandalorian Mythosaur skull. I printed the skull in transparent resin, coated it in concrete, and let it crack. When illuminated from behind, it creates a mesmerizing, heartbeat-like glow. For the engraved wooden base, I mixed coffee powder with glue into the paint. Before it dried, I used a flame to heat it, creating a fantastic cracked-stone texture. A final touch was an Arduino programmed with WLED to animate the runes with a rotating light. This project, like 3D printing, taught me to step back and see challenges from a new perspective.

iKier for Creators: A Review from the Workshop
After years of use, the iKier design philosophy aligns perfectly with what creators need:
Accessibility: The machines are built for people like me. They strike a balance between ease of use and powerful capability.
Value: The pricing makes professional-level creativity accessible to hobbyists working from a home workshop and entrepreneurs starting a small business.
This combination of technology, precision, and affordability is exactly what the maker community needs.
Conclusion: Your Creative Horizon Awaits
My journey with 3D printing led me to learn 3D CAD, which in turn showed me that a diode laser cutter was the perfect tool to expand my creative universe. I was right. I moved from simple downloaded models to designing and executing my own unique creations. Affordable materials like wood, slate, glass, and plastic became my canvas.
I now share this journey on my Fat Air YouTube channel and on my blog at traum-hobby.de. My goal is to inspire others. I hope my projects show you what's possible and give you the confidence to start something new—something that fills you with the same pride and joy I feel when a finished project lights up a room and brings a smile to someone's face.
Isn't that the best reason to explore what you can create with an iKier laser?
